Chapter 9 - The Voice of Innocence

Emily stepped closer to her father and Sarah. The five-year-old child, who had spent seven hundred days imprisoned in her own mind, reached out her tiny hand and gently rested her fingers over Sarah's dirty, trembling hand—the hand holding the mysterious faded object.
Sarah looked at the little girl, a soft, heartbroken smile touching her dirt-stained face. "Hi, little one," Sarah whispered softly. "I kept it safe. Just like I promised you in the woods that night."
Emily looked at the object, then looked up into her father's face.
For the second time in two years, the little girl spoke, her voice clearer, stronger, and filled with an incredible, intuitive understanding:
"She saved me, Daddy."
Jonathan let out a ragged, sob-wracked groan. He pulled his daughter tightly into his broad chest, burying his face in her brown hair, weeping openly on the Greenwich sidewalk. The powerful, untouchable billionaire was broken wide open, overwhelmed by the miracle of his daughter's voice and the crushing weight of the truth that had finally stepped out of the shadows.

Victoria dropped to her knees beside them, wrapping her arms around both Jonathan and Emily, sobbing hysterically as the family held each other in the bright afternoon sun.
Chief Miller and the security team stood guard around them in a tight perimeter, their eyes scanning the surrounding street with newfound, lethal vigilance, realizing that the real enemy was not the woman outside the gate, but someone hidden deep within the Vance family's corporate inner circle.
