Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Accident

The mention of his late sister, Clara, struck Jonathan like a physical blow. Two years ago, Clara Vance had died in a fiery, single-vehicle crash on a dark, winding road outside Greenwich—a tragic event that police had ruled an accidental loss of control. It was the exact same night that five-year-old Emily had been found wandering near the estate grounds, traumatized, muddy, and completely silent, never speaking another word from that moment on.
Victoria gasped, stepping out onto the sidewalk behind her husband, her face turning pale. "Clara...? What does Clara have to do with this woman?"
The homeless woman lifted her head, looking past Jonathan to Victoria, then down at little Emily, who had followed her father out through the open gate and was now standing right beside them.
"I wasn't always like this," the homeless woman whispered, her eyes filled with profound, tragic truth. "My name is Sarah. I was Clara's closest friend... the one she trusted when she realized someone inside your family's firm was sabotaging her business."
Jonathan’s breath hitched in his throat. "Sabotage...?"
"Clara discovered who was stealing from the Vance estate accounts," Sarah continued, tears streaming down her face. "She was coming to tell you that night, Jonathan. She had the proof right here in this case... but her car was forced off the road. I was following in my own car behind her. I pulled Emily out of the backseat before the flames took the vehicle... but I couldn't save Clara."

Sarah looked up into Jonathan's terrified eyes. "The people who ran Clara off the road saw me. They destroyed my life, burnt down my apartment, hunted me until I had nothing left... until I had to hide on the streets as a ghost just to stay alive."
Jonathan stared at Sarah, his analytical mind reconstructing the dark, forgotten tragedy of that night. Emily hadn't just been traumatized by an accident; she had witnessed the violent betrayal of her aunt—and the homeless woman kneeling before them was the angel who had saved his daughter's life from the flames.
