Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of the Greenwich Myth

The silence that followed Jonathan's whispered question was heavier than the two years of quiet that had preceded it. Victoria, sensing the seismic shift in her husband's posture, stepped forward, her hand reaching out to touch Jonathan's black wool jacket.

"Jonathan... what is it?" Victoria sobbed, her voice trembling with confusion and terror. "What is she holding? Who is she?"

Jonathan didn't answer his wife immediately. His dark eyes remained glued to the homeless woman outside the gate. His hand, resting on the iron bar, was trembling so violently that the metal rattled softly against the latch.

"Miller," Jonathan spoke, his voice dropping into a low, unrecognizable rasp that frightened the security chief. "Open the gate."

Chief Miller blinked in utter shock. "Sir? With all due respect, we don't know this woman. She could be—"

"I said open the gate!" Jonathan roared, turning his head with a look of such raw, unhinged authority that Miller reflexively pulled his keycard from his belt and tapped it against the electronic scanner.

A heavy mechanical click echoed across the driveway, followed by the deep, hydraulic groan of the massive black iron gate slowly swinging inward.

The barrier between two worlds was gone.

The homeless woman did not stand up immediately. She remained on her knees on the pavement, looking up at the tall, powerful billionaire in the black suit who was now stepping out onto the public sidewalk toward her.

Jonathan dropped down onto his knees directly in front of her, uncaring that his thousand-dollar suit trousers were hitting the dusty concrete. He reached out with both hands, his fingers hovering inches away from the faded object still cradled in her dirty palm.

"Where did you get this?" Jonathan demanded, tears finally welling in his own eyes, threatening to spill over his dark lashes. "Answer me! Where did you find this?"

The woman swallowed hard, her cracked lips parting as she spoke in a dry, raspy whisper: "It was in the car, Jonathan. On the night your sister died. I was there... I tried to save her."
