Chapter 6 - The Face of Horror and Truth

Driven by a sudden, overwhelming desperation, Jonathan pushed himself up from the ground and took two heavy steps straight up to the black iron bars.
He leaned forward, looking through the steel vertical grates, his eyes dropping directly onto the hand of the homeless woman kneeling on the sidewalk.
For the first time, Jonathan saw the front face of the small, faded object resting in her dirty palm.
The audience, locked in a strict rear perspective, still saw nothing of the object's face—only the back of Jonathan’s head and the sudden, catastrophic transformation of his face as he processed the image before him.
The instant Jonathan’s eyes registered what the object was, he stopped dead in his tracks.
The color drained from his face with terrifying speed, leaving his complexion ashen and ghostly white. His pupils dilated in sheer, unadulterated horror. His strong, masculine jaw dropped open, and his breath exited his lungs in a sharp, painful wheeze.
His mind reeled as pieces of a dark, forgotten puzzle violently slammed together in his brain. The mysterious night two years ago... the unexplainable accident that had taken his younger sister's life... the missing evidence... the secret that had broken Emily’s voice... and the true identity of the woman standing in rags outside his home.
He slowly raised his eyes from the object, looking up at the dirty, tear-stained face of the homeless woman kneeling behind the gate.
She wasn't a random stranger. She wasn't a intruder.
She looked up at Jonathan through the iron bars, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks, nodding her head slowly in silent, agonizing affirmation.
Jonathan turned his head back toward his weeping daughter, then back to the homeless woman, his entire reality shattering into a million pieces in the bright Greenwich sunlight.
Jonathan whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror, realization, and heartbreak:
May you like
“How...?”
The homeless woman offered no verbal reply. She simply held the faded object tighter in her trembling hand, crying silently as the heavy black iron gate stood between them, holding back a storm of secrets that was about to break the family forever.
