Chapter 4 - The Threat and the Hidden Treasure

The atmosphere at the mansion gate turned razor-sharp. Chief Miller stepped around Emily, placing his hand firmly on the iron latch of the gate, his face rigid with professional suspicion.

"I'm giving you three seconds to back away from the fence, ma'am, or we will detain you for trespassing," Miller warned sternly, his voice echoing off the stone pillars.

The homeless woman didn't look at the guard. She kept her eyes fixed on Emily’s face. Slowly, painfully, she reached her dirt-stained right hand inside the heavy, torn pocket of her old dark coat.

The movement was slow, but to trained security personnel, an unseen hand moving into a heavy jacket pocket was a potential threat. Miller’s hand immediately moved toward his holster.

"Ma'am! Keep your hands where I can see them! Right now!" Miller barked, stepping forward aggressively.

Jonathan stepped in front of his daughter, placing his hand gently over Emily’s shoulder to pull her slightly behind his body, his instinct to protect his child overriding everything else. "Miller, hold!" Jonathan commanded, his analytical eyes scanning the woman's face. He saw no violence in her tear-streaked eyes—only a profound, crushing sorrow that felt strangely familiar.

The homeless woman ignored the warnings. Her trembling hand slowly emerged from the dark interior of her coat pocket.

In her fingers, she held a small, faded object—worn around the edges, discolored by time and weather.

The camera, positioned tightly behind the woman's shoulder inside the vertical 9:16 frame, revealed only the back side of her dirty hand and the nondescript rear casing of the item. The front face of the mysterious object remained completely hidden from the viewer's vision, shrouded in deliberate, intense mystery.

The instant the object cleared her pocket and caught the bright Connecticut sunlight, Emily saw it.

The effect was instantaneous and explosive.

Five-year-old Emily’s entire physical posture changed. Her eyes widened to their absolute limit. Her chest heaved with a violent, ragged intake of air. Her tiny, pale lips began to quiver uncontrollably as tears flooded her eyes, spilling down her cheeks in hot, uninterrupted streams.

Jonathan felt his daughter’s shoulder shaking under his hand. He looked down at Emily, his heart pounding wildly as he witnessed a reaction he had not seen in seven hundred days.
