Chapter 2 - A Shadow at the Gates of Paradise

The squeak of worn metal wheels against concrete broke the quiet afternoon atmosphere of the estate.
Outside the heavy black iron gate, standing on the public sidewalk, was a thirty-eight-year-old homeless woman. She was a picture of extreme hardship and physical weariness, wearing an oversized, torn dark coat over faded layers, her brown hair messy and tucked beneath a dark burgundy knit hat. Beside her sat an old, rusting wire shopping cart filled to the brim with tattered blankets, plastic bags, and the meager remnants of a life lived on the fringes of society.
The woman stopped moving. She let go of the shopping cart handles and stepped closer to the towering iron bars of the gate. Her weather-beaten face, lined with dirt and fatigue, lifted toward the garden. Her dark eyes locked directly onto five-year-old Emily sitting on the wooden bench in her light pink floral dress.
Inside the perimeter, Chief Miller spotted the stranger immediately. His posture shifted into an aggressive, defensive stance. Reaching up with his right hand, he pressed his ear-comm button and raised his two-way radio to his mouth, moving quickly across the driveway toward the gate to remove the intruder from the property line.
"Ma'am, step away from the gate," Miller commanded loudly through the iron bars, his hand resting near his jacket closure. "This is private property. Keep moving."
The homeless woman did not move. She did not flinch or run away. She simply stood completely still, her tear-filled eyes staring through the thick vertical iron bars, gazing intently at the little girl holding the stuffed rabbit.
Suddenly, five-year-old Emily gasped silently.
For the first time in twenty-four months, the little girl’s head snapped up. Her hollow hazel eyes locked onto the woman standing outside the gate. Her small body trembled violently. Before anyone in the garden could react, Emily dropped her stuffed rabbit onto the grass, leaped to her feet, and sprinted straight toward the iron gate as fast as her tiny legs could carry her.

Across the lawn, Jonathan’s heart leapt into his throat. He saw his silent daughter running with unprecedented, desperate speed toward a stranger.
“Emily!” Jonathan roared, his voice filled with pure panic as he sprinted down the terrace steps after her.
