Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW IN THE HARRINGTON LINE

Miles turned his head slightly toward his Security Chief, who was staring at a secondary feed on his tactical tablet.

"Chief," Miles growled. "Who is on the third-floor surveillance feed?"

The Security Chief’s hands were shaking as he tapped the glass screen. "Sir... the third-floor feed was cut from the master console ten minutes ago. The security feed is showing a looped background image of the empty hallway."

Alexander took a slow step forward, his eyes locked onto the upper balcony where the velvet curtain had moved.

"Uncle Julian never went to South America, Miles," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal whisper. "He's been living inside this mansion’s private safe-suite for three years. He’s the one who gave Sophie her new identity as 'Sarah Cole'—he brought her here to keep her close as leverage against me when I finally surfaced."

Sophie felt the room spin around her. The memory of her miraculous escape two years ago—the unknown benefactor who had provided her forged papers, her clean background check, and the job placement at the Harrington estate—suddenly transformed from a gesture of mercy into a calculated, predatory trap.

"No..." Sophie whispered, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "The agency told me it was a relocation program..."

"There was no agency, Sophie," Alexander said, turning his face toward her for the first time, his expression softening into something resembling genuine remorse. "Julian used you. He knew if I survived, I would eventually come for my daughter."

Miles looked at his brother, then turned his gaze up toward the dark mahogany door at the end of the third-floor landing—the door leading to the estate's sealed archive wing.

"Julian is eighty years old," Miles said, his jaw locked tight. "He’s bedridden."

"Julian died six months ago, Miles," Alexander replied flatly. "The person living in that wing is his son—Marcus."
