Chapter 5 - THE OVERRIDE OF THE PERIMETER GATES

Without warning, a sharp, metallic screech echoed from the end of the long stone driveway.

Through the tall arched windows, everyone in the foyer watched in horror as the heavy, wrought-iron security gates slowly began to swing inward on their hydraulic hinges. The high-intensity halogen floodlights lining the perimeter wall flickered, switching from green to flashing red as an automated override signal flooded the mansion's main defense network.

Miles spun around toward the front doors, his hand instinctively moving inside his suit jacket toward his concealed holster.

"I ordered those locked!" Miles roared at the Security Chief. "Who authorized the gate sequence?"

The Security Chief slammed his fingers across his tablet, his face dripping with cold sweat as red error codes flashed across his screen.

"Executive override, sir!" the Chief shouted back in panic. "The clearance code was entered from a hardwired master keycard—Class Alpha authorization! Only three of those cards were ever minted!"

The black sedan outside smoothly engaged its engine. The vehicle rolled forward through the opening iron gates, its tires crunching heavily over the wet gravel of the circular driveway as it approached the front steps of the mansion.

A dead, suffocating silence fell over the entire grand foyer. The armed security guards raised their weapons, taking aim through the heavy glass doors, awaiting the billionaire's command.
