Chapter 7 - THE REVELATION ON THE UPPER BALCONY

The shifting of the heavy velvet curtain on the third-floor landing sent an instantaneous wave of ice through the grand foyer.

Miles Harrington backed slowly into the doorway, his eyes never leaving the shadowed figure visible through the high interior glass of the upper atrium. His Security Chief snapped his tactical radio to his collar, shouting urgent orders to the interior perimeter team to sweep the east wing.

"Hold your fire!" Miles commanded, his voice cutting through the rising panic of his security detail. He stepped back inside the foyer, pulling his hand away from his holster, though his posture remained coiled and ready for violence.

Outside, Alexander walked slowly up the broad marble steps of the front entrance, unbothered by the three red laser sights dancing across his dark cashmere coat. He stepped through the heavy double mahogany doors into the bright, crystal-lit foyer.

Sophie shrank back against the carved mahogany banister of the grand staircase, holding three-year-old Ruby tightly against her chest. Ruby buried her face into her mother’s shoulder, weeping softly into the pink fabric of her stuffed rabbit.

"Stay back from him, Sophie," Miles warned, stepping directly into the line of sight between Alexander and the young mother.

Alexander stopped ten feet inside the foyer. He looked at his younger brother, a faint, bitter smile touching the corners of his mouth.

"Eight years is a long time to play dead, Miles," Alexander said softly, his eyes scanning the opulent surroundings. "You built a nice empire on the foundation I left behind."

"You died in Capri," Miles spat, his voice tight with rage. "I buried what was left of your boat. I took over the family operations because there was no one else left."

"You buried a setup," Alexander corrected flatly. "Our uncle lined that yacht with thermite because I refused to sign over the European shipping routes. I spent six years in a cold-war medical facility in Zurich putting my spine back together while he cleared out the family trusts."

Sophie gasped softly, her brown eyes wide as she looked between the two brothers. The terrifying monster she had fled two years ago—the abusive, controlling husband who had tracked her every move—was revealing a history far more vast and deadly than she had ever imagined.
