Chapter 6 - THE MAN FROM THE DEAD

The black sedan came to a complete halt directly in front of the mansion’s main entrance steps. The engine cut off, leaving only the sound of heavy rain hammering against the glass windows and the hum of the crystal chandeliers overhead.

The rear door of the sedan opened slowly.

A man stepped out into the rain. He wore a heavy, dark cashmere coat over a dark suit. As he stood to his full height, the harsh driveway floodlights illuminated his face. He was older and thinner than the man in Miles’s ten-year-old photograph, his dark hair streaked with premature gray at the temples, but his eyes carried the same sharp, dangerous intensity.

Sophie backed away rapidly toward the staircase, pulling Ruby behind her skirt, her body shaking uncontrollably.

Miles pushed open the heavy double mahogany doors, stepping onto the covered stone porch, staring down at the brother he had mourned for eight long years.

Alexander raised both empty hands, palms forward, stepping away from the vehicle.

"I’m not here for Sophie," Alexander called out, his voice smooth, deep, and chillingly familiar as it echoed off the stone facade.

Miles stopped at the top of the marble steps, his hand remaining locked on the grip of his weapon, his voice laced with venom. "Then why are you breathing, Alexander?"

Alexander looked past Miles, his eyes drifting up toward the high, dark third-floor windows of the mansion facade.

"Because someone else is watching the house," Alexander said quietly.

Inside the grand foyer, Sophie and Miles instinctively turned their heads, looking upward toward the dark interior balcony overlooking the grand staircase, as a heavy velvet curtain behind one of the upper floor windows subtly shifted, revealing a shadowed figure standing in the dark.
