Chapter 1 - THE TEXT AND THE LOCKDOWN IN THE FOYER

The grand foyer of the Harrington mansion was a monument to sheer, uncompromising power. A pair of soaring crystal chandeliers hung suspended from a three-story vaulted ceiling, casting sharp, brilliant light across pristine polished marble floors that reflected every archway like still water. Tall, reinforced arched windows framed the expansive front entrance overlooking a sweeping, circular stone driveway, where a row of glossy black SUVs sat idle. Surrounding the perimeter, towering iron security gates stood guarded by suited security men armed with concealed sidearms and earpieces.

Sophie Bennett—known to the household for the past two years as Sarah Cole—stood near the base of the grand sweeping staircase. At late twenties, her brown hair was loosely pinned back, framing a face defined by quiet resilience and lingering fear. She wore a simple, elegant ivory blouse tucked into a dark pencil skirt. Clinging tightly to her hip was her three-year-old daughter, Ruby. Ruby had soft brown curls pinned with a pink bow, wearing a soft pink dress, her small fingers white-knuckled around the ear of a worn stuffed rabbit.

Standing near the double mahogany front doors was Miles Harrington. In his late thirties, Miles was a billionaire whose family name commanded terrifying respect across both corporate and underworld circles. He was tall, muscular, with dark wavy hair, trimmed stubble, and subtle black-ink tattoos creeping along his neck and hands from beneath the cuffs of an immaculate black suit.

Miles pulled his smartphone from his inner jacket pocket as a high-priority alert pinged. His dark eyes scanned the encrypted message on the screen, and his face instantly hardened into stone.

Ruby buried her face into Sophie’s neck, her small voice trembling.

"Mommy, don’t let him take me," Ruby whimpered, pointing a tiny finger toward the iron gates outside.

Miles’s head snapped toward the front windows. Through the glass, past the security detail, a sleek black sedan with heavily tinted windows sat idling quietly on the street just beyond the gate.

"Lock everything," Miles barked, his voice vibrating off the marble walls with lethal authority. "Full perimeter lockdown. Right now."

He turned sharply back toward Sophie, stepping into her space, his dark eyes locking onto her pale face with terrifying focus.

"Who is Sophie?" Miles demanded.
