Chapter 10 - THE UNBROKEN AUTHORITY

The grand foyer stood at the razor-edge of total destruction. The armed security guards held their positions, their weapons aimed upward at Marcus, but nobody dared pull a trigger with an active detonator in his hand.
Alexander looked across the marble floor at his younger brother. For the first time in eight years, the two Harrington brothers shared an unspoken, instinctual understanding—a tactical synchronization born from a lifetime of surviving their family's bloody legacy.
"Marcus," Miles said loudly, stepping into the center of the foyer under the brilliant light of the crystal chandelier. "You always were bad at reading electrical schematics."
Marcus’s brow furrowed slightly on the balcony. "What are you talking about?"
"You used the Class Alpha executive override card to enter the archive wing," Miles said, his voice completely calm, devoid of a single tremor of fear. "That card doesn't just bypass security doors. It automatically reroutes the sub-basement power grid through the auxiliary defense relays."
As Miles spoke, the Security Chief silently tapped three commands into his tablet.
A sudden, high-voltage electrical hum vibrated through the floorboards. The glowing red light on Marcus’s detonator pad instantly turned a dull, inert gray as the signal frequency was completely severed by the mansion's internal electromagnetic dampeners.
Marcus blinked down at the dead pad in disbelief, his thumb jamming frantically against the toggle switch. "No... no!"
Before Marcus could react further, Alexander moved with terrifying, fluid speed. He drew a suppressed pistol from beneath his dark cashmere coat, raised it with one hand, and fired two precise rounds upward through the center of the balcony railing.
THWIP. THWIP.
The suppressed shots struck the steel frame of the balcony door behind Marcus, shattering the glass panel and sending him stumbling backward into the dark archive hallway, dropping the useless detonator over the railing.
The detonator clattered loudly across the polished marble floor of the foyer, spinning to a halt near Sophie's knees.
Miles didn't hesitate. He turned toward Sophie, dropping to one knee beside her and Ruby. He reached out his large, calloused hand—the hand covered in subtle black ink—and laid it gently over her trembling shoulder.
"It's over, Sophie," Miles said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unwavering protection. "Nobody is taking you or Ruby. Not Marcus, not the past, not anyone."

Sophie looked into his eyes, seeing the absolute sincerity and overwhelming power behind his promise. She pulled Ruby closer, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the terrifying nightmare of her past finally crumbled under the protection of the Harrington empire.
Outside, the rain continued to pour over the secured driveway, but inside the grand marble foyer, the long-buried secrets of the Harrington family had finally come into the light—and a new, unshakeable order had been established.
