Chapter 9 - VANESSA’S STORY COLLAPSES
Vanessa denied everything at first.
The alley?
Misunderstanding.
The money?
Daniel authorized family-support payments generally.
The forged petition?
A draft prepared “in anticipation of possible legal issues.”
Daniel’s signature?
Administrative reproduction.
The phrase was so absurd Rebecca wrote it down twice.
Then digital forensics began.
The email to Hannah came from Vanessa’s laptop.
The private-investigator invoice was paid with Vanessa’s credit card.
The forged petition was created on her home office computer.
The family-trust transfers were authorized using Daniel’s delegated household credentials at times Daniel was demonstrably elsewhere.
And Daniel’s executive assistant confirmed Vanessa specifically instructed staff to block Hannah’s calls.
Then investigators recovered deleted messages between Vanessa and the private investigator.
One read:
If H approaches Daniel directly, we need enough instability material to scare her back into compliance.
Another:
Do not contact the child. School/location only.
That distinction helped Vanessa slightly.
She had not directly stalked Maya.
But the intent was undeniable.
Then came the worst message.
Sent after Hannah refused to move away:
Daniel cannot know now. If he finds out after Claire, he’ll turn it into some redemption mission and blow up everything I built with him.
There it was.
Motive.
Vanessa had not hidden Maya to protect Noah.
She hid Maya because Daniel discovering an unknown daughter after losing Claire might redirect his life away from the future Vanessa wanted.
