Chapter 13 - THE SECOND SIGNATURE

Six months after the alley, Rebecca called Daniel.
“There’s another document.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“What now?”
It came from Vanessa’s storage unit.
A private investigator located the box during civil discovery.
Inside were copies of Hannah’s emails, Maya’s school information, and several draft legal documents.
One stood out.
Not emergency custody.
A proposed paternity acknowledgment.
Daniel’s name.
Maya’s name.
Never signed.
But attached was a handwritten note in Vanessa’s writing:
If D learns naturally, control timing. Best outcome: acknowledgment without contact until M older.
Daniel stared.
Vanessa had considered eventually telling him.
Just not while Maya was young enough to change his priorities.
Children were variables again.
Timing.
Control.
Access.
He felt rage return.
Then Rebecca handed him one final page.
A letter Hannah mailed seven years earlier to Daniel’s old office.
The first one.
Still sealed.
Vanessa had it.
Daniel opened it.
Hannah’s younger handwriting filled two pages.
She told him she was pregnant.
She said she was frightened.
She did not ask for money.
She wrote:
I don’t know what this means for us. Maybe nothing. But you deserve to know, and someday this baby deserves to know whether you wanted to be found.
Daniel stopped reading.
Seven years.
One sealed envelope.
Vanessa had possessed the truth almost from the beginning.
Not last year.
From the beginning.
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
“She knew then?”
Rebecca nodded.
Apparently Vanessa had been working temporarily in Daniel’s old company’s executive office during his Cincinnati transition. She intercepted the forwarded personal letter, opened it, and kept it.
At the time, Daniel and Vanessa were only friends.
That made the motive stranger.
And darker.
She had been controlling his future long before she had any recognized place inside it.
When confronted with the document later, Vanessa finally admitted she had seen the letter.
Her explanation:
Daniel was overwhelmed with the move.
Hannah was “chaotic.”
Claire had just entered his life.
Vanessa thought she was protecting him from a mistake.
Then she waited too long.
Then the lie became harder to reverse.
Then years passed.
Then she married him.
The secret became existential.
That was how seven years disappeared.
May you like
Not through one master plan.
Through one immoral decision repeatedly renewed.
