Chapter 4 - HANNAH AND DANIEL

Daniel met Hannah Hart eight years earlier.
It was not some sweeping romance.
That detail mattered too.
He was thirty-one.
Hannah twenty-five.
She worked as a graphic designer for an architecture firm leasing space from Daniel’s company.
They met during a building-renovation meeting.
Then coffee.
Then dinner.
For five months they were happy in the uncomplicated way people can be when neither has yet demanded a future.
Then Daniel received an offer to lead a major redevelopment project in Cincinnati.
Hannah’s mother had just been diagnosed with breast cancer.
She could not leave Cleveland.
Daniel could not decline without abandoning years of work.
They tried distance.
Failed.
No betrayal.
No villain.
They ended it painfully but cleanly.
Six weeks later, Hannah discovered she was pregnant.
She called Daniel.
His number had changed after moving to a new company plan.
She emailed.
No answer.
She mailed a letter to his corporate office.
No response.
At twenty-five, frightened and caring for a sick mother, Hannah interpreted silence as rejection.
Then she saw photographs online months later.
Daniel was dating Claire.
That ended Hannah’s attempts.
She decided:
He had moved on.
She would not force herself into his life.
That was Hannah’s first mistake.
Not because she owed Daniel romance.
Because Maya deserved truth.
Hannah admitted that later.
For seven years, she raised Maya alone.
Her mother died when Maya was two.
Hannah’s brother Ben helped constantly.
Money was tight.
But Maya was loved.
Then, eighteen months before the alley, Maya began asking seriously about her father.
Not vague questions.
His name.
Where he lived.
Whether he knew she existed.
Hannah finally searched for Daniel again.
She discovered Claire had died.
Then found that Daniel had remarried Vanessa.
Hannah sent one email to Daniel’s publicly listed business account.
Subject:
About a child you may need to know
Daniel never saw it.
Vanessa did.
May you like
Because Vanessa helped manage Daniel’s executive correspondence while he transitioned back to full-time work after Claire’s death.
That was where the real deception began.
