Chapter 8 - THE PATERNITY TEST

Daniel demanded a formal paternity test.

Not because he doubted Hannah emotionally.

Because Maya deserved a fact no adult could later edit.

The result came nine days later.

Probability of paternity:

99.9987 percent.

Daniel sat in his truck alone and cried.

Not joy.

Not only.

Seven birthdays.

Seven Christmas mornings.

First steps.

First tooth.

First day of kindergarten.

Nightmares.

Fevers.

Gone.

Hannah had photographs.

That wasn’t the same.

When he met her afterward, anger finally surfaced.

“You should have told me seven years ago.”

“I tried.”

“You tried until it got hard.”

Hannah flinched.

Daniel continued:

“And then last year you took Vanessa’s money.”

“Yes.”

“You believed I would buy silence?”

“I believed you had already chosen silence.”

“You should have spoken to me.”

“I know.”

There was no perfect innocent person in that part of the story.

Vanessa deceived.

Hannah surrendered too quickly to the deception because poverty and fear made the offer powerful.

Daniel had built a life where Vanessa could manage parts of his communication without oversight.

Each fact carried different weight.

But all mattered.

Hannah finally said:

“I can’t give you back seven years.”

“No.”

“I also won’t let guilt make me hand Maya to you like she’s compensation.”

Daniel looked at her.

Good.

That was exactly what he needed to hear.

Maya was not restitution.

So they moved carefully.

Visits.

Dinner.

A park.

No overnight stays immediately.

No forcing Noah to call her sister.

No photographs posted publicly.

No big “family reunited” performance.

Daniel started showing up.

That was the only useful thing he could do.
