Chapter 10 - WHAT SHE DID TO NOAH
The custody situation regarding Noah changed faster than the Maya case.
Vanessa had no biological or adoptive parental rights to him.
Daniel was Noah’s sole legal parent after Claire’s death.
He immediately removed Vanessa from all school and medical permissions.
Changed locks.
Filed for separation.
Then Noah’s therapist began asking careful questions.
Not:
“Did Vanessa hurt you?”
Open questions.
What happened when Dad wasn’t home?
What happened when you signed?
What happened when you did not understand?
Noah described a pattern Daniel had never seen fully.
Vanessa turned away while speaking so he could not lip-read.
Removed his processor as punishment once.
Refused to repeat things.
Told him signing was “baby behavior.”
Threatened to leave restaurants if he became overwhelmed.
And several times said:
“Your dad needs a wife who isn’t spending her whole life managing you.”
Daniel read the therapist’s summary and had to put it down.
He wanted to confront Vanessa physically.
He did not.
Instead he did something harder.
He told Noah:
“I missed things.”
Noah watched him.
Daniel signed as he spoke.
I SHOULD HAVE SEEN.
Noah signed back:
YOU BELIEVE NOW?
YES.
ALWAYS?
Daniel’s throat closed.
I WILL TRY ALWAYS. IF I MISS, TELL ME AGAIN.
Noah considered.
Then signed:
OKAY.
Not forgiveness.
