Chapter 9 - WHAT RICHARD HAD REALLY BEEN HIDING

The financial review lasted months.

Richard’s business was in worse condition than anyone knew.

Whitmore Strategic Solutions had lost two major contracts and carried significant tax liabilities. Rather than tell Evelyn their retirement plans were collapsing, Richard began using Daniel’s accounts as bridge financing.

The first unauthorized transfer was small.

He intended to replace it.

Then another creditor called.

Then another.

Richard discovered that the forged broad power of attorney made banks easier to manipulate.

Once the first lie worked, he expanded it.

He attempted to refinance Daniel’s mansion because the property contained enough equity to rescue his business.

When the lender questioned title, Richard submitted the false deed.

When Claire discovered discrepancies, he tried to discredit her.

When Daniel’s investigation became harder to hide, Richard accelerated the refinance.

The blizzard confrontation was not planned months in advance.

It was panic.

Claire had printed the invoices Richard thought were buried.

He believed putting her outside before Daniel returned would allow him one uninterrupted night to remove records from the house and prepare his explanation.

He expected Daniel the next afternoon.

The storm changed Daniel’s transportation.

For once, Richard’s timing failed before his paperwork did.

Evelyn cooperated after investigators confronted her with the records. She admitted supporting Richard’s claims that Claire was emotionally unstable, but denied knowing signatures were forged.

Claire believed that distinction.

She did not excuse the rest.

Evelyn had watched an infant sit outside in freezing weather.

Fraud did not cause that decision.

Cruelty did.
