Chapter 8 - THE MORNING AFTER

By morning, the storm had covered the driveway in fourteen inches of snow.
Claire and Lily remained under observation at the hospital.
Daniel sat beside the bassinet in borrowed sweatpants because his Army uniform was still soaked in a plastic hospital bag.
Claire woke and found him reading through her notes.
Every date she recorded.
Every missing bill.
Every argument.
Every time Evelyn called her unstable.
Every account Richard claimed Daniel had authorized.
Daniel placed the notebook down.
“I should have gotten you out earlier.”
Claire shook her head.
“You were trying to preserve the case.”
“I was trying to do both.”
“You couldn’t.”
That truth hurt more than reassurance would have.
Daniel had trusted process because process was what his career taught him to trust.
Claire had lived in the house with the people being investigated.
Their risks were different.
“I kept thinking if I told you everything, you would confront him,” Daniel said.
“I might have.”
“And then the evidence could disappear.”
“So I became part of the evidence.”
He looked at her.
“Yes.”
For several seconds neither spoke.
Then Claire said, “Don’t ever protect me with silence again.”
Daniel nodded.
“I won’t.”
Their marriage survived the betrayal by his parents because Daniel did not ask Claire to pretend he had handled everything perfectly.
He had not.

He had believed knowing the truth was enough.
Claire had learned that truth without immediate protection can still leave someone freezing on a porch.
