Chapter 4 - WHAT CLAIRE ENDURED WHILE HE WAITED

Waiting protected the investigation.

It nearly destroyed Claire.

Daniel could not tell her everything Army CID and the bank investigators were examining because he had been instructed not to alert Richard that financial records were being preserved.

So Claire knew only that Daniel believed her.

She did not know whether he could stop his parents.

Evelyn became increasingly cruel.

She told Claire she was living in Richard’s home by permission.

She moved Claire’s kitchen supplies.

Changed the nursery locks once “for safety.”

Canceled the housekeeper and told relatives Claire had fired her.

When Claire pushed back, Evelyn said postpartum hormones were making her aggressive.

Richard controlled the money.

The household account Daniel left for Claire was drained gradually.

He called expenses “unauthorized.”

Formula.

Diapers.

A pediatric specialist.

Winter clothes for Lily.

Each purchase became another argument.

Claire began documenting everything.

Dates.

Statements.

Emails.

Photographs.

She kept copies in an encrypted cloud folder and sent a second set to Daniel’s military attorney.

The family thought she was powerless because she stayed.

She stayed because Daniel had asked her not to leave the property unless she felt physically unsafe.

Leaving voluntarily could complicate access to personal records and belongings investigators were still tracing.

Then Claire discovered the contractor invoices.

Richard had billed more than $300,000 in “security improvements” and renovations to the home-equity package he hoped to close.

Some work existed.

Much of it did not.

One invoice came from a contractor who had died the previous year.

Another listed an addition to the east wing that had never been built.

The money had moved through Whitmore Strategic Solutions and into a private investment account.

Claire printed everything.

That was the stack Richard found her holding on the afternoon of the blizzard.

“What are you doing?”

“Figuring out how much you stole.”

Evelyn entered behind him.

Richard smiled.

“Daniel knows about every transaction.”

“No, he doesn’t.”

“You’ve been speaking to him behind our backs?”

“He’s my husband.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“This is my house.”

Claire looked at the recorded title on her phone.

May you like

“No. It’s Daniel’s.”

That was the moment he ordered her out.
