Chapter 6 - THE WATERPROOF FOLDER

Daniel spent the first twenty minutes after entering the house caring only about Claire and Lily.

A medic from his transport unit was still nearby and returned after Daniel called. Lily’s temperature was low but not dangerously so after warming. Claire had early cold exposure, numb fingers and dehydration.

Only after the medic said both should be taken for further evaluation did Daniel look at his parents again.

Richard pointed toward the papers.

“You have been manipulated.”

Daniel laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“By who? The bank? The county recorder? Army investigators?”

Evelyn sat down.

“What investigators?”

Richard did not look at her.

That was when Daniel realized she did not know the full story.

He opened the folder.

First came the original deed.

Daniel Whitmore.

Sole recorded owner.

Then the limited military power of attorney.

Tax payments.

Emergency repairs.

Insurance correspondence.

Nothing else.

Next came the forged version Richard had used.

The signatures did not match.

Then bank records.

$84,000 moved into Whitmore Strategic Solutions.

$62,000 into a private brokerage account.

$118,000 categorized as reimbursement for home improvements.

Several smaller transfers from Daniel’s deployment-linked account.

Richard folded his arms.

“That money was temporary.”

“Then why did you hide it?”

“The business needed liquidity.”

“So you stole from me.”

“I borrowed from family.”

“You forged my name.”

Richard lowered his voice.

“Everything I did was to preserve this property and our future.”

Daniel pointed toward Claire.

“You locked my wife and infant outside in a blizzard.”

“That was a separate issue.”

“No. It wasn’t.”

The entire scheme depended on the same belief.

That Richard could decide what belonged to everyone else.

Money.

Property.

Truth.

Even whether Claire and Lily were allowed inside the house Daniel owned.

Daniel turned to Evelyn.

“How much did he tell you?”

She stared at the financial statements.

“He said you transferred the house.”

“I didn’t.”

“He said you authorized the refinance.”

“I didn’t.”

“He said Claire was trying to take the property during the deployment.”

Daniel looked toward his father.

Richard had built two stories.

One for Claire, in which Daniel gave his parents control.

One for Evelyn, in which Claire was trying to steal the house.

May you like

And one for Daniel, in which Claire was unstable.

Everyone remained separated long enough for Richard to keep moving money.
