Chapter 5 - TWO HOURS IN THE SNOW

Claire refused to leave without Lily.
Evelyn went upstairs and packed the suitcases.
Richard took Claire’s car keys from the counter.
Claire tried to call a neighbor.
Her phone battery died after spending most of the day connected to investigators and Daniel.
The storm intensified faster than forecast.
She expected Richard to reconsider once he saw the snow.
He did not.
At 6:38 p.m., he placed the suitcases outside.
Evelyn opened the front door.
“You need space.”
“With a three-month-old baby?”
“You have friends.”
“My car keys.”
“Call someone.”
Claire looked at both of them.
“You know Daniel comes home tomorrow.”
Richard’s face remained calm.
“He’ll understand when I explain what you’ve done.”
That sentence frightened her more than the snow.
They believed they could still control the story when Daniel returned.
Claire stepped outside with Lily beneath her coat because remaining in the doorway while Richard grew angrier felt more dangerous than moving toward the neighboring property.
Before she reached the steps, the door closed.
The electronic lock engaged.
She walked twenty yards before wind forced her back toward the porch, where the stone wall gave partial shelter.
She tried pounding on the door.
Evelyn opened it once.
Claire saw them inside with drinks.
“Please,” she said. “Just take Lily.”
Evelyn’s eyes flickered toward the baby.
For a second Claire thought compassion had won.
Then Richard called from behind her.
“Do not reward manipulation.”
Evelyn shut the door.
Claire sat against the column and tucked Lily beneath every layer of fabric she could remove.
She stopped feeling her fingers.
Then headlights appeared at the bottom of the drive.
Not a rescue vehicle.
Not a neighbor.
Daniel.
His return flight had been rerouted ahead of the storm.
May you like
He had arrived one day early.
Richard never knew.
