Chapter 7 - THE LAST PAGE
The final page in Daniel’s folder was not an arrest warrant.
It was more dangerous to Richard than that because it meant professionals had already begun comparing the stories.
It was a redacted victim-notification copy connected to an Army CID financial-crimes investigation and coordinated civilian referral.
The subject line included Richard Whitmore’s name.
Potential issues under review included:
Forged power-of-attorney documents.
Unauthorized access to accounts belonging to a deployed service member.
Identity-related financial fraud.
False statements to lenders.
Possible wire fraud.
Misappropriation of funds.
Daniel laid it on the table.
Richard stared at his name.
“You have no idea what you’re doing,” he said.
“I didn’t open the investigation.”
“You could stop cooperating.”
“No.”
“I’m your father.”
Daniel looked toward the snow-covered porch visible through the glass.
“You were also Claire’s father-in-law when she begged you to let the baby inside.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“She threatened this family.”
“She threatened your access to my money.”
Evelyn stood abruptly.
“Richard, did you forge his signature?”
He did not answer.
“Did you?”
“I kept this family alive while Daniel played soldier overseas.”
The room went still.
Daniel’s expression changed more sharply than it had all night.
He had spent eleven months away from Claire and his newborn daughter, coordinating field logistics and sleeping wherever his unit slept.
Richard had transformed that absence into an insult.
Daniel closed the folder.
“Claire and Lily are going to the hospital.”
He pointed upstairs.
“Pack what belongs to you.”
Richard laughed.
“You can’t evict us tonight.”
“No. I can’t.”
The laugh disappeared.
Daniel continued.
“My attorney filed for emergency injunctive relief before I landed. You cannot sell, refinance or encumber this house. The bank accounts under investigation are frozen. Tomorrow we begin the legal process of removing you from property you never owned.”
That was the truth behind his threat.
No magical transfer.
No instant eviction.
A documented title.
