Chapter 9 - The Deposition of Lies

Four months after the fall, a special civil deposition was held inside the correctional facility where Vanessa Kensington was being held.

Vanessa sat across the metal table, wearing a faded jumpsuit, her hair limp, her expensive manicure long gone. She looked hollow, aged ten years by four months of real jail time.

Harrison sat across from her, a recording camera running on a tripod beside him.

"Miss Kensington," Harrison began, his tone quiet and measured. "On the morning of May 14th, you met Richard Harrington at his hotel room before walking to the courthouse. Is that correct?"

Vanessa looked down at her hands, her lower lip trembling. "Yes."

"And during that meeting, did Richard tell you that if Khloe died from complications during her pregnancy, he would inherit her personal family trust worth twelve million dollars?"

Vanessa’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with shock. "What?!"

Harrison pulled a printed text message thread from his file, placing it on the table between them.

"This is a message sent from Richard’s private encrypted account to his financial planner three days before the court hearing," Harrison read aloud. "'If the pregnant bitch doesn't survive the stress, the trust reverts to me automatically. Make sure the paperwork is ready.'"

Vanessa gaped at the paper, tears filling her eyes as the cruel reality of her situation finally hit her.

"He used you, Vanessa," Harrison said softly, leaning closer. "He knew you were volatile. He brought you to the courthouse steps knowing you would create a scene. He wanted an altercation. He wanted Khloe to fall."

"No..." Vanessa sobbed, covering her face with her hands. "No, no, no! He told me he loved me! He said we were going to move to St. Barts with his baby!"

"You were his fall guy," Harrison said coldly. "He pushed you into the light so he could hide in the shadows. But if you testify truthfully about his instructions that morning, the prosecutor may consider a plea agreement for your charges."

Vanessa looked at Harrison through her tears, realizing that her only survival lay in destroying the man she had destroyed her life for.

"I’ll tell you everything," Vanessa wept. "I’ll tell you everything he said."
