Chapter 2 - The Neon Waiting Room

The emergency surgical wing of Philadelphia General Hospital was lit by humming fluorescent tubes that cast an eerie, clinical glare over the polished tile floor.
Harrison sat on a plastic chair outside Operating Room 4. His suit jacket was draped over the chair beside him, revealing a white dress shirt stained deep crimson at the cuffs and knees.
He didn't wash his hands. He wanted the blood to dry on his skin. He wanted the feeling of it to burn into his memory, a permanent ledger of what Richard Harrington had done.
The heavy double doors swung open, and a doctor in blue scrubs walked out, pulling off his mask.
Harrison stood up instantly. "How is she?"
"Mr. Cole," Dr. Vance said, his face solemn and lined with exhaustion. "Your sister lost a massive amount of blood from a severe placental abruption caused by the fall. We performed an emergency Cesarean section."
Harrison’s heart hammered against his ribs. "And the baby?"
The doctor took a slow breath. "Your niece was born weighing three pounds, four ounces. She suffered significant distress from oxygen deprivation. She is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on a ventilator. The next seventy-two hours are critical."
Harrison swallowed hard, his throat dry as dust. "And Khloe?"
"She survived the surgery, but she is in a medically induced coma to manage severe internal bleeding and head trauma," Dr. Vance said gently. "She is fighting, Mr. Cole. But she is very weak."
Harrison stood in the quiet hallway for a long time after the doctor left.
He walked down the long corridor to the glass wall of the NICU. Inside, surrounded by humming monitors, wires, and glowing blue lights, lay a tiny girl in an incubator. Her skin was translucent, her chest rising and falling to the mechanical rhythm of the machine.
Harrison placed his large palm against the warm glass wall.
"You hold on," he whispered to the tiny girl behind the glass. "You hold on, little one. Uncle Harry is going to take care of everything."

He pulled his phone from his pocket and pressed a single speed-dial button.
"Marcus," Harrison said into the receiver, his voice ice-cold. "It’s Harrison. Execute Phase One. Freeze every account associated with Harrington Commercial Group by midnight. I want Richard Harrington broke by sunrise."
