Chapter 9 - ETHAN’S INHERITANCE

Ethan had spent his adult life believing Whitmore House belonged to his family because Arthur built it, Frederick expanded it, and Ethan eventually inherited the responsibility of keeping it profitable.

The historical records did not erase the Whitmores’ work.

They established that the Reyes family’s contribution was larger than the public story allowed.

Elena invested capital, secured construction rights, coordinated restoration, and remained entitled to ownership after the company’s later expansion. The property had become valuable partly because of assets purchased through the very funds Frederick claimed she stole.

Ethan began examining the inheritance he took for granted.

He asked the board for an independent audit.

Frederick opposed it.

Vanessa’s attorneys opposed it too, arguing Naomi’s conduct at the engagement party demonstrated an intention to harass the family and disrupt the restructuring.

Ethan watched the ballroom footage again.

Naomi had not kicked first.

She had not continued after Vanessa lost balance.

She had released her and walked away.

The camera angles made that clear.

The same footage also showed Frederick watching from the far side of the ballroom before the attack.

He did not intervene.

Ethan wondered how long his father knew Vanessa planned to create a public incident.

The first consequence came when the title insurer suspended the engagement transfer. Its lawyers needed to understand whether Elena’s ownership interest survived the old settlement before certifying a clean transaction.

Vanessa became furious.

She had been promised an equity stake as part of the marriage arrangement, though Ethan had regarded it as an ordinary financial planning matter.

Now Naomi’s claim threatened to change the valuation beneath it.

Vanessa confronted Ethan in his study.

“You’re letting a maid destroy our wedding.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You kicked her.”

“She humiliated me.”

“In front of people because you thought she couldn’t respond.”

Vanessa stopped.

For the first time, he did not follow her accusation back to her hurt feelings.

Then Ethan asked the question that mattered.

“Did you know who Naomi was before you hired her?”

Vanessa denied it.

He showed her the email.

Reyes daughter has applied. Keep her close until we know what she has.

She read it and looked away.

Ethan removed his engagement ring from the desk where he had placed it after the party.

“There won’t be a wedding until we know what happened.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Your father won’t let you do this.”

Ethan looked toward the window.

May you like

He had heard that sentence in different forms his entire life.

This time, it sounded less like a warning and more like evidence.
