Chapter 14 - WHITMORE HOUSE

The final mediation began in the library and continued into the ballroom when additional board representatives arrived.

Naomi attended with Daniel, the estate’s accountant, and an independent trustee appointed to represent Elena’s surviving ownership interests. Ethan sat with the board delegation. Frederick arrived with his attorneys and spoke very little.

The settlement did not give Naomi the entire mansion.

That had never been Elena’s claim.

It recognized the Reyes estate’s ownership interest in the operating and property structures, restored past distributions where recoverable, and established compensation for assets transferred or pledged in ways that excluded Elena’s rights.

The company agreed to revise its historical ownership record.

It also agreed to issue a public correction of the accusation that Elena stole renovation funds.

Naomi insisted on that provision.

Frederick objected.

“The allegations were made decades ago.”

“They followed her until she died.”

“The company cannot rewrite history.”

Naomi opened the independent audit.

“I’m asking you to stop misrepresenting it.”

That ended the argument.

Frederick faced separate civil claims and potential legal consequences related to the altered records. Vanessa’s role in the document handling and the ballroom assault remained subject to its own proceedings.

Ethan did not ask Naomi to make the dispute disappear for the family’s sake.

He helped negotiate terms that preserved operations while correcting the ownership structure.

Several nonessential assets were sold to fund the agreement. Whitmore House remained open, though the company’s financial position became less comfortable and its expansion plans slowed.

The resolution cost the Whitmores money.

It restored something that had been counted as theirs only because Elena was no longer able to challenge the story.

After the documents were signed, Frederick approached Naomi in the ballroom.

“Your mother should have handled this differently.”

Naomi looked at him.

“She tried.”

“She could have come to me.”

“She did.”

Frederick’s face hardened.

“You don’t know everything that happened.”

“No,” Naomi answered. “That’s why I spent seven months finding the records you kept from us.”

He looked away.

For the first time, he had no one available to translate her answer into insubordination.

Naomi reached into her bag and removed Elena’s brass key.

She placed it on the table.

“I don’t need this anymore.”

Frederick stared at it.

Naomi turned and walked toward the entrance.

Ethan caught up with her near the marble staircase.

“What happens now?”

May you like

She looked back toward the ballroom.

“Now I decide what being part-owner means.”
