Chapter 11 - THE LAST LIE ABOUT ELENA

Naomi remembered the pneumonia.
She was thirteen, and Elena had returned home from the hospital exhausted but determined to attend a meeting about the Whitmore settlement. Naomi begged her to stay in bed. Elena said she needed to sign papers before Arthur changed his mind about helping them.
Naomi remembered seeing a folder.
She did not remember what was inside.
Frederick’s newly produced acknowledgment threatened the case because it appeared to show Elena knowingly relinquished her remaining rights after the original settlement. If genuine, it might narrow or defeat part of Naomi’s claim.
Daniel sent it for forensic examination.
The paper was old.
The ink was consistent with the period.
The signature matched Elena’s writing closely.
For several days, Naomi feared her mother had signed away the rights she later insisted remained.
That possibility hurt more than Frederick’s accusations.
Then Mrs. Bell called.
She remembered collecting Elena from the hospital for a meeting with Arthur. When Elena returned, she was furious because Frederick had presented a different package than the one Arthur promised.
She had refused to sign.
Mrs. Bell remembered the words because Elena said them while still holding the pen.
“I’m not signing away my father’s money to fix your son’s lie.”
Naomi sat very still.
“If she refused, where did the signature come from?”
Mrs. Bell hesitated.
“She signed the hospital discharge papers before I picked her up.”
Daniel obtained those records with the estate’s authorization.
The signature on the hospital paperwork matched the contested acknowledgment, including an unusual interruption where Elena’s pen skipped across the final letter of Reyes.
A document examiner found evidence consistent with the signature image being reproduced rather than written naturally on the disputed page.
The last acknowledgment was likely another fabricated instrument.
The pattern repeated across decades.
Frederick used genuine documents to make false ones appear authentic, then relied on the passage of time to weaken anyone who questioned them.
The emotional consequence came when Naomi revisited her mother’s last letter.
Elena had written that she wanted Naomi to learn a profession where people could not dismiss her for lacking expensive clothes or a powerful surname.
Naomi had fulfilled that wish.
She became an investigator.
Then she put on a gray uniform and returned to the mansion, knowing the same people would underestimate her again.
The chapter ended when Daniel confirmed Frederick authorized the production of the disputed acknowledgment.
Vanessa had forwarded the file to the legal team.

She was not simply a beneficiary of the present engagement transfer.
She had helped produce the latest attempt to erase Elena’s rights.
