Chapter 4 - THE KEY THAT FIT NOTHING

Elena’s brass key did not open Arthur’s office.

It did not fit the old records cabinet, the library desk, or the safe behind the ballroom’s portrait wall. Naomi tested it only when she could do so without drawing attention, and after six weeks she began to fear her mother had misremembered its purpose.

Then Mrs. Bell found her staring at the service staircase.

“You look like someone trying to remember a house you knew when you were little,” the household manager said.

Naomi admitted Elena was her mother.

Mrs. Bell did not look surprised.

“I wondered how long it would take you to tell me.”

She had worked at Whitmore House for thirty-two years. Elena hired her, trained her, and helped her keep the position when Arthur considered replacing older staff with a cheaper contractor. Mrs. Bell knew the public story about the missing funds, but she had never believed Elena stole them.

“Your mother was many things,” she said. “Careless with accounts wasn’t one of them.”

Naomi showed her the key.

Mrs. Bell turned it over.

Then she looked toward the ballroom.

“There used to be a records room beneath the west stairs. Arthur had it sealed after your mother left.”

Naomi felt her pulse quicken.

“Why?”

“He said the renovation plans changed.”

“What was inside?”

“Property files. Old construction drawings. Agreements between your mother and the family.”

The entrance had been concealed behind a wall of decorative paneling during a later refurbishment. Mrs. Bell knew the location because she remembered the builders complaining that they were covering a perfectly usable storage room.

Naomi did not attempt to break in.

Daniel arranged a lawful records-preservation demand after locating an old architectural plan showing the room. The Whitmore family’s attorneys responded that the space contained obsolete building materials and no relevant corporate documents.

That answer made the room more interesting.

The escalation came when Naomi found a maintenance request issued two days before the engagement party.

WEST STAIR STORAGE — FINAL CLEARANCE.

The contractor was scheduled to remove the paneling, empty the space, and prepare it for conversion into a private wine room.

Naomi sent the request to Daniel.

He called immediately.

“Whatever is behind that wall may be gone by Monday.”

The engagement party was Saturday.

The clearance would begin Sunday morning.

Then Mrs. Bell brought Naomi a second piece of information.

Vanessa had instructed staff to keep Naomi in the ballroom throughout Saturday evening.

Not in the service corridor.

Not near the west stairs.

Visible to guests.

Naomi finally understood why Vanessa tolerated her presence for seven months.

The family did not simply want to monitor her.

They wanted her somewhere public when the records disappeared.
