Chapter 6 - THREE HUNDRED WITNESSES

Naomi almost resigned before the party.

Daniel suggested she leave the mansion, avoid confrontation, and let him pursue the records through the courts. The evidence they had already gathered supported preservation demands, and a public incident could distract from the ownership issue.

Naomi agreed in principle.

Then she remembered her mother spending years asking people to examine documents while the Whitmores controlled every explanation of what happened.

She decided to finish her scheduled shift.

Not to provoke Vanessa.

To see whether the family would follow through with the clearance while she remained visible.

The ballroom filled by seven. Ethan greeted investors beneath the chandeliers. Frederick stood near the entrance with senior family advisers. Vanessa moved from group to group in her champagne-colored gown, ensuring photographers captured her beside the right guests.

Naomi cleaned spilled drinks, collected glassware, and waited.

At eight fifteen, Vanessa approached.

She accused Naomi of moving a jewelry case from the bridal suite.

Naomi denied it.

Vanessa raised her voice.

The nearest guests turned.

Then a waiter lost his grip on a tray, and champagne spilled near Vanessa’s dress. Naomi crouched to clear the glass.

Vanessa stepped forward.

The kick came a second later.

Naomi caught her ankle.

Everything after that happened in front of cameras.

Vanessa screamed.

Ethan turned.

Naomi released her.

The crowd heard Vanessa call her a damn maid.

Then Naomi said the words she had carried through sixteen years of watching powerful people turn employment into obedience.

“I used to be.”

The answer did not mean she had stopped working as a housekeeper that evening.

It meant she had stopped accepting the role the Whitmores assigned to the Reyes family.

Her mother was not merely an employee.

And Naomi had not returned as a servant seeking permission to complain.

She had returned as Elena Reyes’s legal successor, accompanied by an attorney preparing to challenge the ownership structure beneath the party.

After Naomi reached the corridor, Daniel called.

“The preservation order was granted.”

She closed her eyes.

“When?”

“Eight twelve.”

Three minutes before Vanessa attacked her.

The court had ordered the relevant records preserved before anyone began the next morning’s clearance.

Naomi sent the order to Ethan’s corporate counsel and the independent title insurer handling the engagement transfer.

Then she received the next message.

They’ve already opened the west wall.

Naomi turned toward the service staircase.

She had been right about the timing.

But the family had moved faster than Daniel expected.
