Chapter 3 - WHY VANESSA HIRED HER

Vanessa had recognized Naomi before Naomi put on the uniform.

The proof arrived through an email Naomi obtained from a former employee of the Whitmore family office. The message was sent two days after Naomi applied for the housekeeping position.

Reyes daughter has applied. Keep her close until we know what she has.

The sender was Vanessa.

The recipient was Frederick Whitmore, Ethan’s father.

Naomi read the email several times before saving it to an encrypted evidence folder. Frederick had been a junior executive during the dispute with Elena and had taken over the family business after Arthur died. He was publicly known as a careful steward of the mansion, a generous donor, and the person who brought Whitmore House into the luxury event market.

Naomi remembered him differently.

He had stood beside Arthur during Elena’s settlement meeting, taking notes while Naomi waited in the hallway with a schoolbag on her knees.

Vanessa’s decision to hire Naomi suddenly had a purpose. She wanted the Reyes daughter inside a building where her movements could be monitored and her behavior could be turned into evidence if necessary.

Naomi did not know the entire plan.

She knew she was being watched.

Her housekeeping assignments changed almost immediately. Instead of cleaning guest suites, she was sent to the ballroom, east corridor, and administrative offices. Twice she found unfamiliar staff members entering rooms shortly after she finished working there. A maintenance technician asked whether she had touched the old records cabinet. Vanessa repeatedly questioned her about her mother.

“Did Elena ever tell you why the family let her go?”

Naomi answered mildly. “She said they disagreed about money.”

Vanessa smiled. “That’s one way to describe theft.”

Naomi did not react.

She had learned that the easiest way to keep suspicious people talking was to let them believe their version had already won.

Then she found the first contradiction inside the mansion’s records.

Arthur’s original renovation account had been closed when Elena left. The company claimed the account was empty after the fraudulent payments. Yet a later property statement referred to a continuing obligation labeled Reyes Capital Adjustment.

A capital adjustment was not how a business ordinarily described money owed by a thief.

It was how a business might describe an unresolved investor balance.

Naomi photographed the reference and sent it to her attorney, Daniel Brooks, who had been helping her investigate discreetly. He advised against confronting the Whitmores until they established what the adjustment represented.

Two weeks later, Ethan returned from a business trip and found Naomi carrying a ladder into the library.

He read the name on her badge.

“Reyes?”

Naomi looked at him.

“Yes, sir.”

He studied her face. “Did your family ever work here?”

“My mother did.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Elena?”

Naomi nodded.

For a moment she thought he might ask why she was back.

Instead, he said, “My grandfather always said she knew this house better than anyone.”

Then he walked away.

That was the first time Naomi wondered whether Ethan had inherited the mansion without inheriting the whole lie.
