Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Intrusion

Alexander turned away from his desk and looked back through the clear glass doors. Out on the sunlit terrace, Tommy was still standing completely alone beside the flower beds, holding his cracked plastic bucket filled with black soil. The child looked so small, so fragile against the soaring skyline of the city, yet he possessed a quiet, heartbreaking dignity that had completely shaken Alexander to his core.
Alexander took a deep breath, preparing to answer Maria’s question—to explain that he was bringing a child who had been failed by every institution in the city into his home to give him justice and refuge.
Before the words could leave his lips, the heavy, soundproof double doors of the executive office suddenly burst open with a loud thud.
Alexander and Maria both whipped their heads around in surprise. Standing in the doorway was Alexander’s head of security. The security guard was a forty-two-year-old hardened former military operator who had managed Alexander’s personal protection for a decade. He was a man trained to remain stoic under extreme duress, yet right now, his face was completely pale, his chest heaving as if he had just sprinted up sixty flights of stairs.
The guard’s eyes were wide with a mix of shock and utter disbelief as he held his work phone tightly in his right hand.
“Sir...” the security guard gasped, his voice trembling slightly as he stepped rapidly into the room, his black suit jacket flapping open. “Sir... there’s something about that boy you need to know.”
Alexander’s posture immediately went rigid. He spun around completely, stepping away from the glass doors to face his security chief.

“What are you talking about?” Alexander demanded, his voice turning sharp and guarded. “Speak clearly.”
Without saying another word, the security guard rushed forward and handed his work phone directly to Alexander.
