Chapter 2 - A Child’s Heartbreaking Confession

The chilly morning breeze whistled gently across the high-rise terrace, carrying the subtle fragrance of damp soil and sweet blossoms. Alexander’s heavy leather shoes clicked softly against the white marble tiles as he approached the flower bed. His long shadow fell directly across Tommy’s small, dirt-covered hands, blocking the morning sunlight.
The little boy immediately froze. Tommy’s heart hammered against his ribs as he recognized the shadow of authority looming over him. His small fingers, caked in thick dark earth, remained hovering over the cracked plastic bucket—a cheap, faded container held together by a thin spiderweb of fractures along its rim. Tommy slowly raised his head, clutching the bucket tightly against his thin chest as if expecting an immediate blow or an angry outburst.
Alexander stood tall, looking down at the malnourished child. His voice was naturally deep and firm, shaped by decades of commanding boardrooms, yet he unconsciously softened his tone just a fraction.
“Why are you taking my soil?” Alexander asked, his brow furrowing as he looked at the handfuls of dirt inside the cracked bucket.
Tommy looked up into the billionaire’s piercing eyes. His face was smudged with dirt, his hazel eyes wide with a combination of sheer exhaustion and profound sorrow. His small lips trembled from the cold, but his voice carried a raw, devastating honesty that shattered the serene stillness of the penthouse garden.
“I need it to bury my mother and sister,” Tommy whispered, his small fingers tightening their grip around the cracked plastic rim until his knuckles turned white.

The words hung in the crisp morning air like a physical impact. Alexander froze completely. The powerful billionaire, who had faced down hostile corporate takeovers and aggressive media magnates without blinking, felt as though the breath had been violently forced from his lungs. The contrast between his multi-million-dollar luxury garden and the horrific reality of a starving child stealing earth to bury his family was a sudden, crushing revelation.
For the first time in his adult life, Alexander Morgan’s calculating mind went completely blank. He stared at the dirt beneath the boy’s fingernails, unable to process the depth of the tragedy standing in front of him.
