Chapter 8 - THE BLOOD AND THE PROMISE

The sheer physical strain in the room reached a breaking point. Rain poured off the roof eaves in heavy, roaring curtains, and the wind rattled the terrace doors so hard the bronze handles clicked rhythmically against the wood.

Kate was screaming now—not out of fear, but from the raw, instinctual demand of her body fighting to expel the child before its oxygen ran out completely. Her skin was burning hot against Alexander’s chest, her hair completely soaked with sweat, her fingers bloody where her nails had torn his skin.

"Push, Kate! Now!" Miriam commanded, her voice cutting through the noise like a trumpet. "Give me everything you have left! Right now!"

Kate squeezed her eyes shut, her throat tight as she bore down with every remaining ounce of energy in her exhausted frame. Alexander leaned forward with her, his broad shoulders shielding her, his face buried in the crook of her neck, shouting encouragement into her skin.

"That's it, baby! Push! I've got you! Push!" Alexander yelled, his broad frame shaking under the exertion.

Beneath the sheets, Miriam’s gloved hands moved with extraordinary speed. With a swift, precise anatomical maneuver, she hooked two fingers beneath the infant's shoulder, rotating the tiny body just enough to clear the pubic bone, while simultaneously slipping her index finger under the tight coil of the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck.

With a sharp, fluid tug, Miriam freed the cord.

A second later, a tiny, dark form slid out onto the sterile blue pad spread across the white bed linens.

The room froze.

The baby lay completely still on the bed. It was tiny—impossibly tiny at twenty-nine weeks—its skin pale, blue-tinted, and covered in white vernix and blood. It didn't breathe. It didn't cry. It lay motionlessly under the warm yellow glare of the bedside lamp.

Kate slumped back against Alexander’s chest, completely spent, her breathing ragged and shallow. She looked down toward the foot of the bed, her eyes widening in absolute horror as she realized the complete silence in the room.

"Why isn't he crying?" Kate whimpered, her voice cracking into a tiny, helpless sound. "Alexander... why isn't he making a sound?"

Alexander stared down at the motionless infant, his chest locked, his heart stopping in his chest.
