Chapter 3 - THE DRAFT ON THE FLOOR

The room seemed to shrink, the silence between the thunder claps outside growing thick and suffocating. Kate let out a soft, ragged exhale as the peak of the contraction passed, her head slumping forward, her wet hair falling over her shoulders like a veil. She was pale, conscious, and painfully aware of every second ticking by.

Her eyes flickered open, heavy with pain and exhaustion, and locked onto Alexander standing at the foot of the bed.

Then, her gaze drifted past his broad shoulders, past his dark wool coat, down through the open mahogany doors to the top of the marble staircase landing.

Lying on the floor just outside the threshold was the heavy black leather case Alexander had dropped when he heard her scream. The sudden impact had forced the latch open. Slipping halfway out of the dark leather pocket was a single sheet of heavy, cream-colored legal paper. The bold black heading at the top of the page was clearly legible even in the dim light: PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.

Kate’s expression shifted. The raw, physical pain in her eyes gave way to something far colder, far deeper—a quiet, crushing betrayal that cut straight through the medical crisis.

"You brought papers," Kate whispered, her voice rasping against the quiet hum of the room's heating vents.

Alexander turned his head, following her gaze down to the hallway floor. He felt a sudden, sickening knot form in his stomach. The document that had seemed so necessary, so clean, so final three hours ago in his attorney’s Midtown office now looked like an absolute atrocity lying against the marble floor.

He turned back toward her, taking a quick step closer to the bed, reaching out a hand he didn't realize was trembling.

"Kate—" he began, his voice dropping into a desperate register.

"You came here to divorce me," Kate said, not as a question, but as a statement of bitter, undeniable fact. Tears welled in the corners of her brown eyes, catching the golden light of the bedside lamp. "On the night our child is coming..."

Before Alexander could formulate a response, before he could explain the months of silence or the anger that had driven him to sign those pages, Kate’s body went rigid.

A new, far more violent contraction seized her torso. Kate gasped for air, her back arching off the rumpled white sheets, her hands twisting into the fabric with terrifying force as a low groan tore from her throat.
