Chapter 10 - THE SHADOW ON THE LANDING

Miriam swiftly wrapped the tiny, crying infant in a fresh, warm thermal blanket, placing the small bundle gently onto Kate’s exposed chest. The baby was tiny enough to fit completely within the span of Alexander’s two hands, its skin rapidly turning from a pale blue to a warm, healthy pink as it breathed.
Kate lifted her trembling, sweat-stained hands, cradling the tiny life against her skin, her tears falling onto the soft flannel wrap.
Alexander reached out his broad, tattoo-covered right hand—the same hand that had signed corporate takeovers and multi-million-dollar contracts—and gently, terrifyingly carefully extended a single finger toward his son.
The tiny infant’s hand, no larger than a postage stamp, opened reflexively and curled four microscopic fingers around Alexander’s index finger, holding on with surprising strength.
Alexander looked down at his wife and newborn son, his eyes filled with an overwhelming, redemptive warmth that erased every trace of the cold, arrogant man who had walked into the estate two hours ago.
"He's beautiful, Kate," Alexander rasped, his voice thick with unreserved love as he kissed her wet forehead. "He's perfect."
Kate looked up into his gray eyes, seeing the raw truth mirrored there. "We almost lost him, Alex... we almost lost everything."
"I'm not going anywhere," Alexander swore, his tone absolute, unshakable, and real. "I'm staying right here with you both. I'm so sorry, Kate... I'm so sorry."
Miriam gathered her used instruments into her black bag, her face softening into a weary, satisfied smile as she watched the family unit locked in their embrace.
"The neonatal transport team from Westchester Medical is five minutes out," Miriam said gently, wiping her hands on a clean towel. "They'll get him into an incubator and transport him to the NICU. He's a fighter, Alexander. Just like his parents."
Suddenly, a soft draft of cold air blew through the open master bedroom doors.
Alexander glanced up from the bed, his protective instincts instantly re-engaging.
Standing in the shadow of the hallway landing, just beyond the threshold where the black leather document case still lay open on the marble floor, was the figure of the estate's senior butler.
He was holding a wireless house phone in his hand, his face pale and nervous under the hallway lights. He didn't step into the room, but he caught Alexander’s eye, making a subtle, urgent gesture with his head.
Alexander carefully loosened his grip on Kate, ensuring she was fully supported by the pillows before sliding off the edge of the mattress. His dark dress shirt was soaked with sweat and stained with blood, his forearm raw and bleeding from Kate’s nails.
He stepped out onto the cold marble landing, stopping right beside the cream-colored divorce decree lying on the floor.
"What is it, Arthur?" Alexander asked in a low, dangerous whisper.
The butler swallowed hard, holding out the phone.
"It’s your father's senior partner from Midtown, sir," the butler whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "He says he received the signed digital copy of the divorce petition an hour ago... from an unknown IP address registered to this house."
Alexander froze. His gray eyes narrowed into slits of ice as he stared down at the physical paper lying at his feet.
He hadn't sent a digital copy. He carried the only physical original in his hands when he arrived.
Someone else inside the Hudson Valley estate had initiated the legal proceedings behind his back—and someone wanted Katherine and the baby out of the Avery family line before the night was over.

Alexander looked back through the open doorway at his wife holding their newborn son, then down at the phone in the butler's hand, his expression transforming into one of absolute, lethal resolve.
The storm outside was clearing, but the true war for his family was only just beginning.
