Chapter 6 - THE UNSEEN TERROR

Miriam Hale leaned low over the foot of the bed, her sterile gloved hands moving swiftly beneath the rumpled white sheets. Her face was a mask of professional focus, illuminated by the warm light of the bedside lamps and the cold flashes of lightning beyond the glass.
Suddenly, Miriam’s hands stopped dead still.
Her movement ceased for a half-second—a pause so brief that an untrained observer would have missed it entirely. But to a man whose entire life depended on reading micro-expressions and shifts in momentum, the sudden stillness was like an air raid siren echoing through the room.
Miriam’s entire expression changed. The calm, authoritative composure melted away, replaced by a dark, intense gravity that chilled the warm air in the bedroom. Her eyes narrowed as she looked down beneath the sheets, her breath catching in her chest.
Alexander caught the shift instantly.
His heart dropped into his stomach. The blood in his veins seemed to turn to liquid ice.
"What?" Alexander demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh, protective growl as his arms tightened reflexively around Kate’s upper body. "Miriam, what is it?"
Miriam Hale did not answer him. She didn't look up. Her hands resumed moving, but with a sudden, desperate speed that betrayed the immediate danger unfolding beneath her fingers.
Kate felt the shift in the room's atmosphere. She turned her tear-streaked, frightened face away from Alexander’s shoulder, her dark brown eyes fixing onto the midwife with absolute terror.
"Miriam... please," Kate begged, her voice barely a whisper against the sound of the rain. "Is the baby okay? Please tell me..."

Miriam stayed completely silent, her gloved hands working feverishly beneath the stained linens, her jaw set tight against whatever truth she had just discovered.
Alexander held Kate tightly against his chest, his muscular frame trembling as the room fell completely, horrifyingly silent, save for the relentless battering of the rain against the glass—and the knowledge that whatever threat had just revealed itself was lying right between them, hidden from view beneath the rumpled white sheets.
