Chapter 7 - THE SILENT RACE

The quiet inside the master suite was terrifying. Outside, the Hudson Valley storm peaked, throwing wild sheets of water against the roof, but inside, the only sound was the high-pitched, metallic beep of the portable fetal heart monitor sitting on the mahogany nightstand.
Beep... beep... beep...
The rhythm was slowing down.
Miriam Hale didn't look up at the couple. Her gloved hands worked with practiced, desperate efficiency beneath the heavy duvet. She reached with her right hand into the open black medical bag, pulling out a sterile pair of blunt-tipped surgical scissors and a set of heavy plastic umbilical clamps, setting them onto a tray with a sharp metallic clatter.
"Miriam, talk to me!" Alexander roared, his voice shaking the warm lamps on the nightstand. His tattooed chest heaved against Kate’s back. "Tell me what the hell is happening right now!"
Miriam finally looked up. Her eyes were sharp, cold, and entirely focused on survival.
"The cord is compromised," Miriam said, her voice dropping into a flat, steady tone meant to convey instructions without causing total hysteria. "It’s wrapped tight around the baby's neck, and the shoulder is lodged against the pelvic bone. Every time Kate contracts, the blood flow is getting cut off."
Kate let out a horrified gasp, her face going completely white. She twisted her head up toward Alexander, her hands clawing desperately at his shirt collar. "Alexander... save our baby! Please, do something!"
Alexander looked into his wife’s panicked eyes, feeling completely helpless for the first time in his forty years. He was a man who solved problems with contracts, money, and sheer physical force, but none of those things meant anything in this room.
"Look at me, Kate," Alexander commanded, his voice trembling as he cupped her wet, pale face in his broad hands, forcing her brown eyes to lock onto his gray ones. "Look at me, sweetheart. Breath with me. We are going to get through this. Both of you. Do you hear me?"
May you like
"I need you to pull her up, Alexander!" Miriam ordered sharply, reaching down under the sheets. "Raise her hips! We need space to clear the shoulder!"
Without hesitation, Alexander shifted his weight, digging his feet into the mattress, wrapping his heavy arms under Kate’s thighs and lower back, lifting her elevated frame off the bed with pure physical strength, holding her stable while the storm outside raged against the glass.
