Chapter 2 - THE UNEXPECTED TRUTH

Alexander took the wide marble stairs three at a time, his heavy leather shoes slapping against the runner carpet. His heart hammered violently against his ribs—a frantic, erratic rhythm that shattered years of practiced emotional control. The mansion was dark, saved only by the soft glow of hallway lamps, but as he reached the upper landing, the sound of labored breathing and frantic movement drew him toward the double doors of the master suite.

He pushed through the heavy mahogany doors and burst into the master bedroom.

The room was bathed in the warm, amber light of two bedside lamps, contrasting sharply with the pitch-black darkness and cold rain pouring against the terrace windows outside. The king-sized bed in the center of the room was in total disarray; crisp white linens were crumpled, twisted, and stained with dark fluid.

On the edge of the bed sat Katherine "Kate" Avery. At thirty-one years old, Kate was a woman of undeniable beauty, but tonight she looked completely broken by exhaustion and agony. Her warm brown hair was damp with sweat, clinging in messy strands around her forehead and pale face. She wore a pale pink maternity nightgown and matching robe, both rumpled and damp. Her hands were locked into the soft fabric of the duvet, her head thrown back against the padded headboard as she fought through a wave of crushing pain.

Standing on the left side of the bed, calm, authoritative, and moving with practiced precision, was Miriam Hale. Sixty-four years old, with silver-gray hair pulled back into a tight, practical bun, Miriam was an experienced certified nurse-midwife. She wore navy blue medical scrubs, sterile latex gloves, and had a heavy black medical bag sitting wide open on the nightstand, overflowing with monitor cables, sterile dressings, and emergency medication.

Alexander stood rooted to the threshold, his breath catching in his throat.

His eyes traveled down from Kate’s sweat-slicked face, past her trembling hands, and stopped.

For six months, they had lived completely separate lives. For six months, they had communicated only through cold, impersonal emails sent by their respective legal teams. He had not seen her in person since early spring.

Beneath the pale pink fabric of her maternity gown, Kate’s belly was round, heavy, and unmistakably, unmistakably pregnant.

The sight hit Alexander like a physical blow to the chest. The cold, controlled businessman who had spent a decade mastering every variable in his life felt the floor drop out beneath him.

"What’s happening?" Alexander choked out, his voice rough, disbelieving, and stripped of all authority.

Miriam didn't pause her work. She kept one hand on Kate’s abdomen, her sharp eyes scanning a portable fetal heart monitor sitting on the table.

"Preterm labor," Miriam said, her tone clipped, calm, and utterly serious.

Alexander took a hesitant step into the room, his eyes still fixed on Kate’s rounded stomach as if his mind were refusing to process the reality right in front of him.

"How far along?" he demanded, his voice shaking.

Miriam stopped her movements for a fraction of a second. She turned her head and looked directly into Alexander’s wide, terrified eyes.

"Twenty-nine weeks."

Alexander went completely still. The math hit his head with terrifying clarity. Twenty-nine weeks. Seven months.

The child Kate was carrying was his.
