Chapter 7 - RACHEL’S SISTER
Claire Bennett arrived at the hospital the next morning.
She was thin, exhausted, and furious.
She immediately asked to see Noah.
Megan blocked the hallway.
“Before you do, I want the truth.”
Claire studied her.
“You really didn’t know?”
“No.”
The anger in Claire’s face changed.
Not disappeared.
Changed direction.
Claire sat down slowly.
“My sister thought you knew everything.”
Megan closed her eyes.
Claire explained that Rachel had spent years believing Andrew would eventually leave Megan.
Then, later, Andrew changed the promise.
He said he could not break Ella’s home.
He said Megan would never accept Noah.
He said divorce would destroy the company.
There was always a reason.
Always later.
Always almost.
“When Rachel got sick,” Claire said, “she made him promise Noah would finally have a place in the Harrison family.”
Megan felt sick.
“And he agreed?”
Claire nodded.
“In front of her.”
There it was.
The promise Noah had been clinging to.
