Chapter 12 - WHAT RACHEL LEFT BEHIND

Claire later brought Megan a sealed envelope.

“My sister wrote this before she died.”

It was addressed to Megan.

Rachel had never mailed it.

Inside was not an apology.

Not really.

It was something stranger.

A confession from a woman who had spent years inside a lie.

Rachel wrote that she had hated Megan.

She had blamed her for Noah’s exclusion.

She had believed Andrew when he said Megan knew everything.

Only near the end of her life had Rachel begun questioning the story.

Certain dates didn’t match.

Certain conversations made no sense.

Andrew always stopped her from contacting Megan directly.

In the final paragraph, Rachel wrote:

If you truly did not know, then he did this to both of us.

Megan read that sentence several times.

She had spent days seeing Rachel only as “the other woman.”

Now the truth was uglier.

Rachel had made choices.

But Andrew had controlled the information that made those choices possible.

Megan folded the letter.

For the first time, she felt grief for a woman she had never really known.
