Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO DIED

The woman’s name was Rachel Bennett.

Megan had heard it before.

That was what made the betrayal worse.

Andrew had once described Rachel as “someone from an old business circle.”

Nothing more.

No history.

No warning.

No explanation for why Andrew had occasionally disappeared for an evening with vague excuses about clients, investment meetings, or charity boards.

Now Megan learned Rachel had died six weeks earlier.

Cancer.

Andrew had known for almost a year.

Noah had been living with Rachel’s sister, Claire, while arrangements were being made.

Arrangements Megan knew nothing about.

“Were you planning to bring him into our house?” Megan asked.

Andrew looked down.

That was answer enough.

Megan laughed once, cold and stunned.

“So you were waiting for what? The right weekend?”

“Megan—”

“No. Don’t say my name like I’m being unreasonable.”

Andrew lowered his voice.

“I was trying to figure out how to tell you.”

“You had eight years.”

That shut him up.

Then Megan asked the question she was almost afraid to hear answered.

“Does Noah know about me?”

Andrew hesitated.

“He knows you’re my wife.”

“And Ella?”

Another pause.

“He knows she’s his sister.”

Megan felt something inside her turn to stone.

Noah had walked into the Harrison home carrying eight years of resentment.

And Andrew had let everyone pretend it was a normal visit.
