Chapter 8 - THE SILENT DEPARTURE

Cole dangled Sarah’s gym bag over his shoulder, slipping his bare feet into his simple leather sandals near the cubbies.

As they walked toward the glass front exit of the academy, not a single person in the gym spoke. The twenty grapplers stood in a loose circle around the main mat, parting like the Red Sea to give Cole and Sarah a wide, unobstructed path to the door.

Derek stood near the center mat, his head bowed, his hands gripping his red-and-black belt so tightly his knuckles turned white. He didn't look up as Cole passed.

At the front desk, the front-office manager—a young man who usually spent his shifts checking membership cards and playing music over the gym speakers—stood behind the counter with his hands flat on the laminate surface, watching Cole walk past with wide, terrified eyes.

Cole pushed open the heavy glass door, allowing Sarah to step out into the cool evening air first.

Outside, the parking lot was quiet, illuminated by the orange glow of sodium streetlights. The distant hum of highway traffic provided a steady, peaceful background noise that contrasted sharply with the tense, suffocating atmosphere they had just left behind inside.

Sarah walked beside her brother toward his dark, unbranded rental SUV parked near the far edge of the lot. She kept looking over at his side profile—at the short hair, the light stubble, and the relaxed way he swung his arms as he walked.

"Cole," Sarah said softly as they reached the passenger side of the vehicle.

Cole clicked the remote unlock button, opening the door for her. "Get in, Sarah. I'll turn the heater on for your shoulder."

"Cole, wait," Sarah insisted, stopping on the asphalt and looking directly into his face. "Who was that guy talking about back there? What did he mean about Kandahar?"

Cole stopped, resting his hand on the top of the open car door. He looked down at her with a calm, gentle expression that offered no entry into his past.

"He mistook me for someone else, Sarah," Cole said softly, his tone completely even and natural. "People see scars and they make up stories. That's all."

Sarah looked at him for a long moment. She knew it was a lie—or at least a very carefully crafted version of the truth. But looking into his eyes, she also realized that whatever world Cole inhabited when he was away from home, he kept it buried for a reason: to keep her, and their family, safe from the shadows he walked in.
