Chapter 18 - THE BREAKING POINT

Julian Vance was frozen.
He stood twenty feet away, his back pressed hard against the front fender of the silver Charger. His eyes were wide with pure, unadulterated horror. His breath came in ragged, hyperventilating gasps.
In less than five seconds, two seasoned street fighters—men he had paid and begged to enact his revenge—had been neutralized as effortlessly as children playing against an adult. Ray was curled in a fetal position in the gravel, choking on his own vomit, while Hector lay pinned to the earth, terrified to even blink.
Cole walked toward Julian.
He didn't run. He didn't yell. His boots crunched rhythmically against the stone, each step landing like the toll of a funeral bell. The aura radiating from Cole wasn't anger; it was the chilling, absolute authority of a natural predator who had finally decided to finish business.
"Stay back!" Julian shrieked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched whine. He reached clumsily into his waistband, attempting to pull a folding pocketknife from his jeans.
Cole closed the remaining five feet before Julian’s thumb could even find the thumb-stud of the blade.
Cole’s left hand shot out like a striking viper, clamping onto Julian’s throat with crushing force, slamming the back of Julian’s head hard against the Charger's windshield. The glass spiderwebbed beneath the impact with a sharp *crack*.
Julian gasped, the pocketknife dropping from his paralyzed fingers into the dirt.
Cole leaned in close. The distance between their faces was barely four inches. Julian could smell the faint scent of black coffee on Cole’s breath. But more terrifying than anything was Cole’s eyes. There was no rage in them. No adrenaline. Only the vast, cold emptiness of the open ocean at midnight.
"You like choking people, Julian?" Cole asked, his voice a low, terrifying vibration that vibrated right through Julian’s skull.
Julian clawed frantically at Cole’s wrist, but Cole’s grip was an iron band. Julian’s feet lifted slightly off the ground, his toes barely scraping the gravel as his airway tightened.
"P-please..." Julian choked out, tears of genuine terror streaming down his cheeks, mixing with dust. "Please... don't..."
"You had a student in your gym. She trusted you to teach her. She tapped three times, and you held on because you wanted to feel powerful," Cole whispered, his fingers tightening just enough to send Julian’s vision swimming into black edges. "You think you're a dangerous man because you have a black belt? Julian, you are a bug."
Cole leaned closer, his voice dropping into a razor-thin whisper that only Julian could hear.
"If you ever speak my sister's name again, if you ever drive down her street, if you ever step foot inside any gym where she trains, I will not bring you to an alley. I will come to your house while you are sleeping. Do you understand me?"
Julian nodded frantically, his eyes rolling back, terror consuming every shred of his soul. "Y-yes... yes... I swear... I swear to God..."
Cole released his grip.
Julian collapsed to his knees, clutching his bruised throat, coughing violently, gasping for air, weeping openly on the dirt.
Cole looked down at the three broken men scattered across the dead-end alley. He picked up Ray’s fallen tire iron, weighed it in his hand, and casually tossed it through the open window of the Charger.
"Put your friends in the car and get out of San Diego," Cole said quietly. "You have twenty minutes before I get annoyed."

Without another word, Cole turned his back on them, walked over to his truck, and climbed into the driver's seat.
