Chapter 3 - THE IMPERVOUS CALM

Derek’s smile instantly vanished, replaced by a dark, dangerous flare of pride.
He uncrossed his arms, taking two deliberate steps forward until he was standing less than three feet from Cole. His two-hundred-and-ten-pound frame towered slightly over Cole’s leaner build, his broad chest practically brushing against Cole’s shoulder.
"You got a lot of mouth for a guy without a gi," Derek growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous, threatening tone meant to force an immediate retreat. "Who the hell are you? You even know how to grapple?"
Cole didn't flinch. He didn't shift his stance, raise his hands, or blink. He simply looked into Derek’s eyes with a level of complete indifference that seemed to irritate the black belt more than an open insult ever could.
"I'm next," Cole repeated calmly.
Derek let out a harsh, incredulous laugh, turning his head toward the surrounding gym students as if asking them to share in the absurdity of the situation. A few students shifted uncomfortably, but nobody laughed with him. The atmosphere in the room had shifted from casual training to something heavy, electric, and dangerous.
"Alright, tough guy," Derek said, stepping back into the center of the main mat and dropping into a wide, heavy wrestling stance. "No time limits. Let's see how long your big mouth lasts."
Cole walked slowly to the center of the mat. He didn't bounce on his toes. He didn't slap his own face or shake out his arms like the traditional grapplers in the room. He simply stopped three feet from Derek, his body perfectly centered, his weight distributed evenly across the soles of his bare feet.
"Timer's running," Derek barked.
Without waiting for a formal start, Derek suddenly exploded forward.
Leveraging his massive weight and explosive strength, Derek reached out with both hands, aiming to crush Cole’s upper body, drive him flat onto the mat, and establish a heavy, suffocating side-control position before Cole could react.
To the watching students, Derek moved like a freight train.
To Cole, the attack was telegraphed, clumsy, and utterly predictable.
Cole barely appeared to move at all.
As Derek’s heavy frame lunged into his space, Cole took one tiny, precise step sideways with his left foot, dropping his center of gravity by a fraction of an inch. His hands shot out—not to block, but to guide. His right palm caught the inside of Derek’s triceps while his left hand clamped onto the wrist of Derek’s over-extended lead arm.
Using Derek’s own momentum, weight, and aggressive speed against him, Cole executed a flawless, effortless redirection.

The heavy vinyl mat shook violently as Derek’s two-hundred-and-ten-pound body crashed sideways onto the blue floor, his air exploding from his chest in a loud, ragged gasp: "UHF!"
Before Derek’s head even hit the mat, Cole was already moving.
