Chapter 14 - GATHERING CLOUDS

Thirty miles south, inside an industrial park on the outskirts of Chula Vista, the atmosphere was rancid with the smell of sweat, wet leather, and stale anger.

The gym was called *The Iron Den*. Unlike Mark Keller’s brightly lit, family-friendly academy in the suburbs, this facility was a bare-bones combat shed. Rusty iron plates clanked against barbells in one corner, while a stained, battered boxing ring stood near the center. Heavy bags hung from exposed metal rafters like hanging carcasses.

Julian Vance sat on a cracked leather bench, his right wrist wrapped in tight athletic tape. His face was pale, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his cheeks twitched. Across from him stood two men.

The first was Hector Cruz, a heavy-set, tattooed light-heavyweight kickboxer with a flattened nose and cauliflower ears that looked like dried mushrooms. The second was Ray "The Razor" Gannon, an aggressive, wiry welterweight who fought on local Indian casino fight cards and had spent eighteen months in state prison for aggravated assault.

"You let an unranked walk-in do that to you?" Ray scoffed, leaning against the ring ropes with a cruel sneer on his thin lips. "A guy in boardshorts and a grey hoodie?"

"I'm telling you, he wasn't a walk-in," Julian hissed, venom dripping from every syllable. His pride had been utterly gutted, and the phantom ache in his wrist made him want to smash something to pieces. "The guy moved like a ghost. He slipped my single-leg like I was moving in slow motion. And his grip... he grabbed my wrist and felt like a vice. He knew exactly which nerve clusters to pinch to shut down my motor function."

Hector picked up a dirty towel, wiping sweat from the back of his thick neck. "Who is he? Did you run his name?"

"Sarah Briggs' older brother," Julian said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Mark looked him up in the emergency contacts. Name is Cole Briggs. That’s all we got. No social media, no tournament records, nothing on Smoothcomp, nothing on the IBJJF registry. Just a ghost."

"A military guy," Hector surmised thoughtfully, his heavy brow furrowing. "Coronado is right down the road. Navy base. Could be a SEAL. Could be an SWCC guy."

"I don't care if he's Captain America," Julian spat, slamming his uninjured hand down on the bench. "He humiliated me in front of my own students! Elena walked out. Marcus canceled his private lessons this morning. Mark called me at midnight and told me I was 'temporarily suspended' from coaching until things cooled down! That military prick ruined my business in less than five minutes!"

Ray chuckled, a rasping, unpleasant sound. "Mark’s a coward. Always has been."

"I want him dealt with," Julian said, leaning forward, his voice dropping into a conspiratorial growl. "I don't want him killed. I just want him broken. I want his knees smashed so he never walks right, and I want him to know it came from me. Can you find out where he is?"

Hector crossed his thick, ink-covered arms. "Finding people isn't hard in San Diego if they drive a car with plates. Ray's cousin works dispatch for a tow outfit that shares databases with the DMV. Give me the sister's address, and we'll see where the brother parks his truck."

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a slip of paper with Sarah’s home address and the license plate of Cole’s dark grey Ford F-250. He had copied it from the academy’s parking lot surveillance footage before Mark locked him out of the office.

Hector took the paper, glancing at the plate number. "If he’s active-duty special warfare, Vance, you’re playing with fire. Those guys don't call the cops when someone corners them in an alley."

"He's one man," Julian sneered, his arrogance refusing to surrender to logic. "He got lucky on a soft mat with BJJ rules. Let’s see how tough his military training is when three guys catch him in a blind corner with tire irons. Let's see him counter that."

Ray grinned, revealing a row of crooked, yellowed teeth. "Give me two hours. We'll have him pinned."
