Chapter 17 - MEASURED VIOLENCE

Ray Gannon made the classic mistake of a street fighter: he telegraphed his strike with his shoulders before his weapon even moved.
As Ray swung the heavy tire iron in a vicious, horizontal arc aimed at Cole’s ribs, Cole didn't step back. Stepping back gave the weapon maximum velocity at the end of its arc. Instead, Cole closed the distance with terrifying explosive speed, stepping *inside* the swing.
Cole’s left forearm jammed Ray’s bicep at the origin of the strike, neutralizing the power completely. In the exact same microsecond, Cole drove the heel of his right palm straight into the center of Ray’s chest—a kinetic, concussive strike that drove the air straight out of Ray’s lungs with a sickening *gasp*.
Before Ray could stumble, Cole caught the back of Ray’s neck with his left hand, dragged his head downward, and drove a savage, short-range knee strike directly into his solar plexus.
The impact sounded like a wet sandbag being dropped from a roof.
Ray folded instantly, the steel tire iron slipping from his paralyzed fingers and clattering into the gravel. He hit the ground on his knees, clutching his stomach, vomiting bile and fighting desperately for oxygen that his diaphragm simply could not pull in.
The entire engagement had taken less than 1.8 seconds.
Hector Cruz reacted immediately. Unlike Ray, Hector possessed real combat experience. Recognizing that Cole was extremely dangerous at close quarters, Hector stepped forward with a tight kickboxer’s guard, throwing a heavy, thunderous right overhand aimed squarely at Cole’s temple.
Cole slipped the punch to the outside by a fraction of an inch, the wind of Hector’s fist grazing his hair.
Cole didn't trade punches. Trading strikes was a gamble; dismantling balance was a science.
Cole pivoted on his lead foot, snagged Hector’s overextended right wrist with two hands, and dropped his hips into an explosive, classical *Ippon Seoi Nage*—a shoulder throw executed not on soft training mats, but onto hard, jagged industrial gravel.
Hector’s massive two-hundred-and-forty-pound frame went airborne, cutting an arc through the dusty air before crashing violently onto his back on the stone-strewn earth.
*CRUNCH.*
The sheer impact knocked the breath from Hector's lungs in an explosive groan. Before the heavy kickboxer could comprehend what had happened, Cole transitioned seamlessly into a knee-on-belly pin, driving his right knee directly into Hector's sternum with pinpoint pressure. Hector let out a choked gasp, pinned to the earth like an insect beneath a collector's pin, entirely immobilized by pure leverage and body mechanics.
Cole looked down at Hector, his face completely expressionless, not a single bead of sweat on his brow.
"Stay down," Cole whispered.
Hector, staring up into the dead, unblinking eyes of an operator who had killed men with far less effort, raised his trembling, tattooed hands in complete, unconditional surrender. "I'm done... I'm out... I'm out, man..."

Cole stood up slowly and turned his attention to the last man standing.
