Chapter 9 - THE SURRENDER OF THE KEY

Sweat poured down Daniel's forehead, dripping onto his pressed light-blue shirt collar. His hands shook violently as he slowly, carefully raised them away from his belt, unbuckling the small brass key ring attached to his duty belt.

With trembling fingers, Daniel detached a heavy, silver barrel key—the distinct, specialized key used for heavy industrial deadbolts and reinforced security doors.

He held the key out in his open palm, his face completely hollowed by utter defeat and terror.

"She's at the Old Mill property," Daniel whispered, his voice broken and hollow. "The property at the end of the dirt road... behind the old timber barn. The cellar door is under the floorboards."

Tank stepped forward with lightning speed, snatching the silver barrel key from Daniel's trembling palm with a heavy, calloused hand. Tank turned and handed the key directly to Mason.

Mason took the key, feeling its cold, solid metal against his skin. He looked down at the badge on Daniel's belt, then reached out his broad hand, grabbing the heavy gold police badge by its leather backing, and ripped it clean off Daniel's belt with a single, sharp jerk of his wrist.

"You aren't a cop," Mason growled, tossing the gold badge onto the bakery floor, where it landed with a loud, metallic clatter at Daniel's feet. "You're a kidnapper. And your time is up."

Mason turned toward his second-in-command, a sharp-eyed biker named Jax. "Jax, call the State Police Internal Affairs division. Tell them we have a corrupt local detective detained at the bakery with proof of kidnapping and extortion. Tell them to bring a transport van."

Jax nodded sharply, pulling a cell phone from his vest pocket. "On it, Boss."

Daniel slumped against the bakery doorframe, completely ruined, as two of Mason’s largest brothers stepped in closely, pinning him securely against the wall without a single struggle.
