Chapter 6 - THE PHOTOGRAPH IN THE ENVELOPE

As Mason held the letter tightly in his grip, a small, square object that had been tucked deep inside the bottom flap of the paper envelope slipped free.

It fell silently through the air, landing face-down onto the dark oak surface of the bakery table.

It was an old, faded glossy photograph, its edges yellowed with age.

Mason reached out his broad left hand, picking up the glossy photograph by its edge. He turned it over to face him.

On the front of the photograph was an image taken eight years ago in a sunlit park: Sarah, young, beautiful, and smiling radiantly, standing with her arm wrapped around a younger Mason, who was wearing his original motorcycle vest.

Mason’s eyes softened for a fraction of a second at the sight of her face.

Then, his eyes drifted to the back of the photograph, where a single line of fresh, dark blue ink had been hurriedly written across the white paper backing: “She has your eyes, Mason. Protect our daughter.”

The camera remained positioned directly behind the back of the photo, ensuring the exact visual details of the image remained hidden from the audience, keeping the secret locked between the characters.

Mason’s entire facial expression underwent a radical, terrifying transformation.

The color drained from his lips, his jaw setting so hard the muscles along his cheeks quivered. The realization hit his heart like an anvil dropped from the sky—Emma wasn't just a random child in danger. Emma was seven years old. Emma was Sarah's daughter. Emma was his daughter.

Mason slowly lifted his head. His dark eyes traveled from the faded photograph in his hand...

...down to the tiny seven-year-old girl holding onto his waist with terrified trust...

...and finally up to Daniel, the corrupt police officer standing ten feet away with a badge on his belt.

Emma watched her father's face, her small brows knitting together in complete confusion, sensing the monumental shift in the air without understanding the true truth.

Across the room, Daniel stared at Mason’s face, watching the realization dawn in the biker's eyes. The corrupt officer's face lost every single drop of color, his skin turning as pale as chalk as he realized the fatal mistake he had made.

Mason stared at Daniel, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying, raspy whisper that shook the very air in the room.

"What...?"
