Chapter 4 - THE SILVER BEAR AND THE HANDWRITING

Surrounded by the protective wall of bikers, Emma reached deep into the small side pocket of her cardigan. Her tiny fingers fumbled for a moment before she pulled out a small, folded object wrapped in thick, protective plastic.
"Mom said... give this to the biker with the bear," Emma whispered, her voice still raspy from crying.
She pointed her small index finger directly at the small, intricate silver bear patch stitched onto the left breast pocket of Mason’s leather vest, which was now draped around her own shoulders.
Emma reached out her tiny hand and placed a small, worn paper envelope into Mason’s broad, tattooed palm.
Mason stared down at the small envelope resting in his hand. Across the crisp, cream-colored paper, written in dark blue ink, was his own full name: Mason Cole.
The handwriting was distinct, elegant, and instantly recognizable—a slanted, graceful cursive with sharp loops on the capital letters that he had not seen in nearly seven long years.
Mason’s hands went completely, utterly still. The blood in his veins felt as if it had turned to liquid ice. His heart hammered violently against his ribs as a ghost from his past rose up in front of his eyes.
"Sarah..." Mason whispered, his voice cracking slightly under the sudden weight of a memory he had buried deep beneath years of club battles and silence.
Sarah had been the love of his life—a brilliant, gentle woman who had vanished without a trace seven years ago during a volatile conflict between rival territories. He had spent two agonizing years searching every corner of the state for her, finding nothing but dead ends, eventually believing she was gone forever.

With trembling, precise fingers, Mason peeled back the worn flap of the small envelope and withdrew a single sheet of folded notebook paper.
He unfolded the paper and began to read the tight, hurried lines written in Sarah’s unmistakable script. As his dark eyes scanned the desperate words printed on the page, his facial features hardened into a mask of pure, lethal, unadulterated fury.
